Sea Kayak around Coll

You'll discover lots of reasons to kayak around Coll. There are many suitable overnight beaches, or even islands, to stop at and wild camp - completely undisturbed. Some stretches of the coast can be quite exposed but equally, there are many skerries and inlets to provide shelter. Kayaking around Coll isn't considered a novice activity but when you do take the plunge you'll be rewarded with spectacular wildlife encounters and be truly immersed in unspoilt wilderness.

Calmac ferries carry kayaks free of charge (at peak times there may be limited space) although the more experienced paddle over from Mull or the Treshnish Isles. Unfortunately, there is no suitable slipway at the Calmac pier to launch your kayak, the nearest 'easy' launching place being in Arinagour village. To launch at the pier be prepared to carry over some large boulders, it's not impossible.

Info on where to launch you kayak on arrival at Coll, please look here.

Wild Camping

SCOTTISH OUTDOOR ACCESS CODE

If you're planning a wild camping trip, be sure to familiarise yourself with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. It's not complicated - basically, campers should follow a policy of 'leave-no-trace'.

Here are some top points to follow:

  • Avoid overcrowding by moving on to another location if it's already a busy spot.
  • Use a stove, please no camp fire. Never cut down or damage trees.
  • Take away your rubbish and consider picking up other litter as well.
  • If in doubt, ask the landowner. Their advice just might help you find a better camping spot.
