Moths

Butterflies are here

Over 2500 species of moth have been recorded in the British Isles. Compare this with there being some 60 species of butterflies commonly found in the UK, one can, hopefully, imagine that this list of the moths of the Isle of Coll with be incomplete!
Commonly seen in many parts of Coll are six-spot burnet, magpie and millions of micro-moths. Unlike many myths, moths can be extremely beautiful and colourful; you may just need to look closer. They are, unfortunately for them, an important food source for smaller birds.
One hebridean speciality found on Coll is the Belted Beauty moth.
